Wednesday, May 15, 2024 marked the 153rd time I welcomed a group of young people to my Musial Moments program. Approximately 200 students at Holy Family Catholic School listened to me talk about the life and legacy of St. Louis Cardinals immortal, Stan ‘The Man’ Musial. I then connected that life and legacy to three stories from the Musial Awards. Specifically, I include stories from the show where young people are featured doing something extraordinary for someone else.
Each program assembly lasts 45 minutes and the kids get all the energy I have. In return, they give it right back. Musial Moments is free for any school or youth program in the St. Louis Metro Area. I’ll go anywhere the kids are. Since 2015, more than 35,000 kids have heard and shouted the Musial Moments mantra - “Have Fun! Be Good! Play Right!” Three lessons, six words, to go with Stan Musial’s no. 6.
The assemblies are not about baseball per se. They’re about humanity. Stan Musial was great because of how he treated others. Anyone who ever knew him talks about the person before the player. After we’ve all played our last game, how we treat people is what they remember most.
April and May have been incredibly busy. I’ll speak to more than 1,400 kids in nine schools, spanning five Missouri counties and logging 500 miles of travel. I will go wherever they are to teach, inspire, and to motivate. After 150+ presentations, I am no ways tired because the smiles are always bright, there are always new roads to travel, and the work has only begun. Thanks for reading.
